Walton, Kentucky

Walton is a city located in Kentucky, U.S.A.. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,450.

Tourism

Walton boasts the Newport Aquarium and the Millennium Peace Bell just a short distance north of the city. Nearby Florence offers thoroughbred racing.

Walton city has held an annual "Old Fashion Day" every September since 1973 (the 175th birthday of Boone County). Waltonites decorate store windows with old-fashioned artifacts such as quilts, family heirlooms, old photographs. Some residents dress in period costumes. An annual beauty pageant is held, as well as a parade and a street fair with crafts, games, and live music.

Amenities

The City of Walton is part of the Walton-Verona Independent School District. There is an elementary school in the neighboring community of Verona, and a high school within Walton itself. The elementary school houses about 500 students, and services preschool through sixth grade. The high school also serves about 500 students, and teaches grades seven through twelve. One parochial elementary school exists in the city, with parochial high schools nearby. Six universities and ten colleges are within 50 miles of Walton, such as the Northern Kentucky University, Thomas More College, and Northern Kentucky Vocational.

A community library is located on 21 S. Main Street.

The City of Walton cooperates with the Boone County Parks Department to maintain the Walton Community Park. The park has soccer and softball fields, basketball courts, a paved hiking trail, shelters, picnic tables, a playground, and volleyball courts. There is also access to nearby public golf courses.

Geography

Walton is located at 38°51'44" North, 84°36'53" West (38.862192, -84.614749){}.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.1 km² (3.5 mi²). 9.0 km² (3.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.28% is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 2,450 people, 913 households, and 665 families residing in the city. The population density is 271.0/km² (701.4/mi²). There are 992 housing units at an average density of 109.7/km² (284.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.35% White, 0.94% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.69% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.04% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 913 households out of which 41.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% are married couples living together, 14.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.1% are non-families. 23.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the city the population is spread out with 29.7% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 90.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $42,462, and the median income for a family is $45,924. Males have a median income of $36,341 versus $24,858 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,296. 7.7% of the population and 4.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.1% of those under the age of 18 and 7.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
