Smith County, Tennessee

Smith County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 17,712. Its county seat is Carthage6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 843 km² (325 mi²). 814 km² (314 mi²) of it is land and 28 km² (11 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.36% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 17,712 people, 6,878 households, and 5,069 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (56/mi²). There are 7,665 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (24/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.42% White, 2.53% Black or African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.59% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 1.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,878 households out of which 34.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.10% are married couples living together, 9.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.30% are non-families. 23.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.50% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 30.00% from 25 to 44, 23.10% from 45 to 64, and 13.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 97.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,625, and the median income for a family is $41,645. Males have a median income of $30,853 versus $22,133 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,473. 12.20% of the population and 10.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.70% of those under the age of 18 and 14.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
