Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal
In the Pakistani parliament, the MMA is a coalition opposition and it was formed after Pakistan’s becoming a part of the "Global War on Terror". It is against the government of President Pervez Musharraf because of its support of the war and alleges the government of supporting the demands of the United States over its own people.
Those religious parties which formed the MMA are also alleged as a B-Team of the ruling army in Pakistan-- therefore some critics call MMA as the Mullah Military Alliance. MMA contains the following small groups: The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam or JUI’s both factions-- Movlana Fazlur Rehman and Movlana Samiul Haq, Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan or JUP and Jamaat-e-Islami as well as the pro-Iran Shia group Tehrik-e-Islami, formerly known as the Tehrik-e-Nafaz-e-Fiqah-e-Jafaria (TNFJ). The MMA is now present in government in two of Pakistan's four provinces.
The MMA's record of governance in the last 2.5 years has been fair. They have not been guilty of the corruption and the abuse of power that marked the reign of Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif. However many Pakistanis are suspicious of the MMA, believing it wants a theocracy more than a democracy. The Shariat and Hisbah bills the MMA has proposed look very similar to legislation the enabled the Taliban to roam the streets and punish anyone not adhering to their version of Islam, many Pakistanis regard this as a serious abuse of government power as well as an illegal monopolization of Islamic thought and interpretation.
