As of the census of 2000, there are 14,558 people, 6,121 households, and 3,599 families residing in the city. The population density is 569.5/km² (1,475.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.63% White, 0.32% African American, 2.40% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.There are 6,121 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.6% are married couples living together, 9.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.2% are non-families. 34.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. Attractions
Mitchell is home of the world famous Corn Palace. The Corn Palace is decorated with several colors of dried corn and grains creating murals. The theme of the murals is changed regularly.
