Mem is the thirteenth letter of the Phoenician and Hebrew alphabets. The Phoenician letter gave rise to the Greek Mu, Latin M, and the equivalent in the Cyrillic alphabet.

In the Sefer Yetzirah The letter Mem is King over Water, formed Earth in the universe, Cold in the year, and the Belly in the soul. It is given the numerical value of 40.
