Meknes
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The land upon which the city is founded, as well as much surrounding territory, came under the domination of the Roman empire in AD 117. See image posted at History of Morocco.
Meknes was then "founded" in the 8th century as a Kasbah or fort. In the 10th century, a town grew around the fortress with the settlement of a Berber tribe called Maknassa. Meknes saw its golden age following the accession to the throne of Sultan of Morocco Moulay Ismail (1672 - 1727), who made the town his imperial capital.
