Lincoln County, Tennessee

Lincoln County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population was 31,340. Its county seat is Fayetteville6. It is named for Major General Benjamin Lincoln, an officer in the American Revolutionary War.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,478 km² (571 mi²). 1,477 km² (570 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.07% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 31,340 people, 12,503 households, and 9,077 families residing in the county. The population density is 21/km² (55/mi²). There are 13,999 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (24/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.26% White, 7.35% Black or African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 1.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,503 households out of which 31.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.20% are married couples living together, 10.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% are non-families. 24.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 27.70% from 25 to 44, 24.90% from 45 to 64, and 15.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 93.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,434, and the median income for a family is $41,211. Males have a median income of $30,917 versus $21,722 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,837. 13.60% of the population and 10.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.80% of those under the age of 18 and 19.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Trivia

The Lincoln County Process, used in the distillation of Tennessee whiskey, is named for this county, as Jack Daniel's distillery was originally located here. However, a subsequent redrawing of county lines resulted in the establishment of adjacent Moore County, where it is now located, so no current Lincoln County business uses its namesake process.
