History
The station first broadcast on January 1, 1949, as KLEE-TV. It was the first television station in Houston and the 12th in the United States. The call letters were changed to KPRC (noted to stand for Kotton Port Rail Center) in 1950.Because of its affiliation with NBC, KPRC was the first station in Houston to broadcast the first color program in Houston and was subsequently the first to broadcast in full color.
The station and its radio counterpart, KPRC-AM (which came on the air in 1952) were owned by H&C Communications; from their inception until 1994, when the stations were sold. KPRC-TV was acquired by the Washington Post Company. KPRC-AM is currently owned by Clear Channel Communications. In the early 2005 KPRC ratings went into a steep decline and never recovered. For most of the time since then, KPRC has been in third place behind KTRK and KHOU.
