KNWS

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
KNWS (Channel 51) is an independent television station in Houston, Texas. It is one of, if not the only, broadcast station in the United States to develop a 24 hour local all-news format, which was it's original intent.

The station began broadcasting full-power in 1993, which was also the same year they introduced their live news format. This format is best described as a local version of CNN's Headline News channel in the sense that it featured special segments, and pre-recorded newscasts looped then updated throughout the day. Local news was pushed aside throughout 1995, to simulcast live coverage of the OJ Simpson Trial from KTLA in Los Angeles.

In 1998, the station abandoned local news in favor for syndicated programming, sports telecasts (including Houston Astros baseball), and occasional movies. It has since maintained local news updates, using the remains of the station's old newsroom.
