Indang, Cavite
• • •
Indang is a large highland area bounded by Trece Martirez City on the north, Amadeo on the southeast and Alfonso on the southwest. The big asset of this town is the Don Severino Agricultural College which is now called Cavite State University.
The general belief of the people of Indang is that the place became town several hundred years ago. It was named after a big tree called "indan" which grows in the place. However, nobody knows when and for whose credit it was made a town as there is no record to show it. In the beginning, Indang was composed only of the poblacion. But because several people were found living outside the place in some scattered 'pulo', the barrios of Gahitan, Palocpoc and Anuling were created.
Sometime in 1874, the people of the said three barrios led by their prominent local leaders requested the Spanish officials to make an independent municipality out of these three places. After studying their request, the Spanish officials including the priest granted it. The three aforementioned barrios were created into a separate municipality called Mendez Nunez on December 1, 1875 by an Executive Order signed by Governor General Malcampo.
The first Capitan Municipal of Indang was Juan Dimabiling. He was succeeded by Alejandro Ocampo who ordered the people to live near the poblacion so that they could be better protected. Under his leadership, roads were built linking every place in the suburbs to the poblacion. During and after the First World War, abaca was its chief product. This is proof enough for the fact that sinamay weaving is still an important home industry of the women folk in this town today. Native salakots, saddles and other leather articles as well as bamboo baskets are also produced.
The native salakots are made in Barangay Banaba while the saddles are produced in Daine and Kayquit. Rope made out of 'junot' or 'cabo negro', taken from the base of the 'irok' tree can be obtained from Alulod and Bancod. Reference: Imus Municipal Library
