The song
"Slave" parts ways with Spears' previous singles in a number of ways. Firstly, it was written produced by The Neptunes, who have worked with rappers such as Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Mystikal and other hip-hop artists; many therefore believe it symbolized a change in Spears' genre of music. For many, it was the most 'un-Britney' song she had ever released; the lyrics were somewhat raunchy and the video for the single was very sexually-powered. Spears declares her independence in the song whilst also saying how she cannot control herself around a person as she proclaims "I'm a slave for you". Although Spears has said that the song is about dancing and not necessarily sex, her performance at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards (which featured her dancing with a flesh-colored snake) meant that her explanation went unnoticed.
Chart success
"Slave" proved to be a success, peaking within the top 30 of the Billboard Hot 100 and top 20 of both the Top 40 Mainstream and Top 40 Tracks. Moreover, the single, in a number of ways, became Spears' first major cross-over hit. The song became her first ever to place on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks; chart, aswell as the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. For the first time, Spears earned a certain amount of credibility as a true artist in that her music could appeal over a broad range of audiences.
Internationally, the song proved to be an even bigger success, peaking within the top 5 in the UK and top 10 in both Canada and Australia.
