Etymology

This word comes from the syncretism of the Greek God Hermes and the Egyptian Thoth who was also a mythological alchemist known as Hermes Trismegistus who has two books attributed to him, the Emerald Tablet and the Corpus Hermeticum. He was known to possess a magic ability to seal (with spells) and treasure chests so that nothing could access its contents. Alchemists also frequently used distillation in their experiments, and needed an airtight seal to improve the efficiency of their alembic stills. Although most alchemists where considered to be Hermetics by there use of the Emerald Tablets or Corpus Hermeticum adopted as their philosophy
