Black Hawk County, Iowa

Black Hawk County is a county located in the northeastern part of U.S. state of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 128,012, making it the fourth largest county in population in the state. The majority of the county's population resides in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls metro area. Waterloo, the county seat, is located approximately 65 miles east of I-35 at the intersection of U.S. Highways 20, 63 and 218. The city of Cedar Falls is located approximately eight miles west of Waterloo.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,481 km² (572 mi²). 1,469 km² (567 mi²) of it is land and 12 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.84% water.

The Cedar River roughly divides the county in half from the northwest to the southeast corner. The land is mostly level since much of it is on the river's flood plain.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 128,012 people, 49,683 households, and 31,946 families residing in the county. The population density is 87/km² (226/mi²). There are 51,759 housing units at an average density of 35/km² (91/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 88.42% White, 7.95% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.98% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.93% from other races, and 1.49% from two or more races. 1.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 49,683 households out of which 29.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.20% are married couples living together, 10.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.70% are non-families. 27.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.10% under the age of 18, 15.70% from 18 to 24, 25.20% from 25 to 44, 22.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 92.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $37,266, and the median income for a family is $47,398. Males have a median income of $33,138 versus $23,394 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,885. 13.10% of the population and 7.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.40% of those under the age of 18 and 8.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
