John D. Rockefeller

John Davison Rockefeller (* 8. Juli 1839 in Richford, New York, † 23. Mai 1937 in Ormond Beach, Florida) US-amerikanischer Unternehmer.

Rockefeller war Mitbegründer einer Erdölraffinerie, aus der 1870 die Standard Oil Company of Ohio hervorging. Einer seiner Geschätspartner war dabei Henry M. Flagler. Rockefeller führte als unternehmerische Innovation erstmals den Transport von Erdöl in Pipelines ein, was schnell den Transport per Bahn ablöste und größere Fördermengen ermöglichte. Er galt durch seine Unternehmungen als der reichste Mann seiner Zeit und erreichte monopolartige Machtstellungen; finanzierte jedoch aus seinem Vermögen zahlreiche wohltätige Projekte.

Zu den Rockefeller-Unternehmen gehörten und gehören teilweise immer noch die Exxon sowie die Chase Manhattan Bank. Einer seiner Enkel, Nelson Rockefeller, war unter Gerald Ford US-Vizepräsident. Die Initiative und Idee zum Bau des ehemaligen Welthandelszentrum-Komplexes World Trade Center in New York ging ebenfalls auf einen seiner Enkel zurück.

Rockefeller war Baptist und ermöglichte unter anderem den Bau des Hamburger Predigerseminars der deutschen Baptisten. Ebenso war er ein Förderer der Wissenschaft. Er gründete die University of Chicago 1890, das Rockefeller Institute for Medical Reseach und die Rockefeller Foundation.
