1494 - Christoph Kolumbus landet auf Jamaika.
  • 1814 - Napoléon Bonaparte beginnt sein Exil auf der Mittelmeerinsel Elba.
  • 1886 - Arbeiterausschreitungen am Hay Market in Chicago (Haymarket Riot)
  • 1919 - Nachdem ein Geheimabkommen zwischen der Republik China und Japan publik geworden ist, nach dem letzteres die deutsche Kolonie in Qingdao übernimmt, kommt es mit der Bewegung des vierten Mai zu der ersten großen Studentenbewegung in der chinesischen Geschichte mit blutigen Auseinandersetzungen in Peking, dem Erwachen eines nationalen Bewusstseins und letztlich einer kulturellen Erneuerung des Landes.
  • 1945 - Befreiung des Konzentrationslagers Neuengamme durch britische Truppen
  • 1945 - Die 2. französische Panzerdivision unter General Leclerc erreichte Hitlers Berghof in Berchtesgaden
  • 1970 – Während Protesten gegen den Vietnamkrieg werden in Ohio, USA, auf dem Campus der Kent State Universität vier Studenten von Nationalgardisten erschossen.
  • 1980 - Jugoslawiens Staatspräsident Josip Broz Tito stirbt in Ljubljana
  • 1986 - Ein Störfall im KKW Hamm-Uentrop wird wegen der Tschernobyl-Katastrophe nur durch einen anonymen Hinweis bekannt.
  • 1990 - Griechenland. Staatspräsident Konstantinos Karamanlis wird in seinem Amt bestätigt.
  • 1993 - In Andorra wird Oscar Ribas Reig als Regierungschef in seinem Amt bestätigt und tritt die neue demokratische Verfassung in Kraft, die das seit 1278 bestehende Feudalsystem abschafft und ein souveränes Fürstentum (Principat d'Andorra) ermöglicht.
  • 1994 - Ägypten. Unterzeichnung des Gaza-Jericho-Abkommens unter Schirmherrschaft Mohamed Hosni Mubaraks.
  • 1995 - Die "C.S.S Hunley", das erste U-Boot der Welt, das 1864 ein gegnerisches Schiff versenkt hatte und dabei selbst verunglückte, wird gefunden und geborgen.
  • 1998 - Armeniens Außenminister Wartan Oskanjan besucht Deutschland.
  • 1998 - In Indonesien werden die Energiepreise um bis zu 70 Prozent erhöht, was zu Krawallen und Unruhen mit mehreren hundert Toten in Jakarta führt.
